Neiko 01417A 6" Digital Caliper — Plastic Electronic Measuring Tool
Product description
Overview
This digital caliper measures linear, internal and external dimensions across a range of 0 to 6 inches (0 to 150 millimeters). The readout appears on a wide LCD that can be zeroed at any position on the slide for comparative measurements. The instrument offers quick switching between inch and millimeter display modes.
Construction and included items
The main body is molded plastic with precision ground jaws and a depth-measuring blade for grooves or recesses. The package includes one LR44 battery installed and one spare LR44 button cell. A thumb-roll adjustment and a locking screw let you position the jaws securely while taking a measurement.
Accuracy and operation
Factory-calibrated, the caliper reports values with a resolution of 0.01" (0.1 mm) and an accuracy rating in the same small increments. An on/off switch and automatic shutoff preserve battery life. The sliding beam features a grooved thumb wheel for finer movement and a stop to hold a set reading.
Use cases
This tool is aimed at hobbyists, makers, and general-purpose measurements—replacing eyeballing with a ruler or tape. It handles external widths, internal openings, and depth probes for slot and hole work. For repeated heavy-duty shop cycles or critical machining tolerances, a metal-bodied, higher-end instrument is recommended.
Pros
- Clear large LCD with inch/mm conversion
- Comes with an extra LR44 battery
- Useful for hobby and general workshop measurements
Cons
- Mostly plastic construction feels fragile
- Can be inconsistent under heavy pressure
- Auto-on behavior may be annoying for some
VerdictThis Neiko 6-inch digital caliper delivers clear, repeatable measurements for DIY, 3D printing and light workshop tasks. It’s primarily a budget plastic unit with precision ground jaws and a large display that reads in 0.01" or 0.1 mm steps. Expect good value for routine measuring and conversions, but look to more robust metal models for heavy shop use or critical machine tolerances.

Fragile tool — handle with care
This item is delicate and mostly plastic, so it requires careful handling to avoid damage.
-
Alejandro 2/5
Jaw alignment concern
The jaws don't close perfectly; a small gap is visible under light, producing about a 0.1 mm discrepancy from base to tip. The clamp should be consistent along its length.

PowerClyde 5/5
Handy compact caliper
I assumed calipers were costly until I tried this small digital unit. The LCD makes measurements easy and it’s a very practical addition to a basic tool kit.
-
Tony Edwards 5/5
Handy and reliable for general tasks
Performs well when you need a quick precise measurement — a useful tool to have for everyday measuring jobs.
-
Tiny Frugal Family 5/5
Accurate enough for 3D printing
Using it for 3D-printed parts and household fixes has been simple and reliable. Measurements are consistent and switching units is quick for matching parts.

Works well but needs a case
Good caliper overall. It would be nicer if it came with a plastic storage case instead of just a cardboard sleeve.
-
Brandy 5/5
Accurate for many jobs
Performs well for measuring a variety of objects.

Stopped working after short use
Worked initially, then failed to power off. After replacing the battery the display showed nonsense numbers and only worked intermittently. Poor build quality.

Sensible low-cost pick
A decent affordable option if you treat it gently. Mine has worked faultlessly for six months and seems like it could last much longer with careful use.
-
AR 3/5
Feels flimsy and imprecise
It feels cheap and has noticeable play if pressed hard. It sometimes powers on by itself. Consider a sturdier caliper for demanding tasks.
-
Flo 3/5
Very lightweight; slight offset
I don't use it often. It feels very light and seems about 0.1 mm off in some checks.
-
MM 5/5
Good value for hobby use
Looks inexpensive and is largely plastic, but it performs well for simple measurements. Readings in 0.01" or 0.1 mm are clear, it auto-zeroes and shuts off, and it includes a spare battery. Ideal if you want better accuracy than a ruler; not for precision machine work.
