Magnetic Travel Chess Board Set — Pocket 7-inch Folding Wood Staunton Set
Product description
This pocket-sized folding chess set is handcrafted from attractive, naturally grained hardwood, finished to highlight the wood’s pattern. The playing surface measures about 7 inches across when opened, making it small enough to carry while still leaving adequate room for comfortable play.
The set includes a hinged wooden case that doubles as the board, a full complement of Staunton-inspired chessmen with magnetic bases, and internal storage for the pieces. Inside the box there are padded foam or velvet-lined compartments with individual indentations to cradle each piece during transport, and many sellers include a small protective fabric pouch for extra protection.
Designed for travelers, the case folds closed and secures for packing in a backpack, suitcase or day bag. The chessmen are weighted and magnetized so they stay in place during play on trains, planes, cars or outdoors. Typical materials are fine rosewood or similar hardwoods, with satin or polished finish on the exterior and soft lining inside to reduce scuffs.
Pros
- Handcrafted hardwood with attractive grain
- Compact 7-inch foldable board and internal storage
- Magnetic bases keep pieces steady during travel
Cons
- Quality control can be inconsistent between sets
- Magnets sometimes weaker than expected
- A few units arrive with rough edges or missing pieces
VerdictA well-made, portable chess set that balances attractive wooden craftsmanship with travel-ready features. The 7-inch folding board, felt-lined interior and molded foam slots keep pieces secure, and the magnets let you play on the move. Quality control varies between units — some arrive flawless, others show minor roughness, uneven pieces or weaker magnets and rare missing parts. If you want a comp

Missing white queen and weak magnets — disappointing
The wooden board looked nice but the set arrived without the white queen, so it was incomplete. The felt-lined storage is convenient but some pieces were uneven and the magnets weren’t strong enough to prevent sliding when the board tilted. Quality control needs improvement.

Highly recommended for travel
Excellent little chess set. The wooden case and pieces look great, and the magnets keep the pieces in place while playing in a car or plane. Very pleased with it.

Mixed feelings — magnets are just adequate
They do stick, but barely. I plan to upgrade the magnets eventually. Packaging was fine. One of my other sets included two extra queens; this one had none. Overall a C+ for me.

Fun, sturdy and perfect for the road
Enjoyable to play and well-made. The magnets are strong and the folding form factor is ideal for trips, hospital visits or tossing into a backpack. I’d buy it again.

Quirky imperfections but still enjoyable
This set lacks any branding on the box and didn’t include extras like spare queens. The finish on my pieces was less glossy than the photos, but at the price I paid it’s been fun to use. Size works well on a desk without feeling cramped, and the magnets hold pieces securely in normal play. Not worth paying a premium for, but satisfactory overall.

Nice board, pieces didn’t match the photo
Board look and compact size are good. However, my pieces seemed roughly finished and one had debris stuck to it. The magnets didn’t perform as dramatically as the listing image suggests — items slid when tilted. If magnet strength is crucial, check before relying on it for travel.

Precioso y bien construido

Jedes Spiel kam separat verpackt.

Excellent quality; very satisfying purchase
A beautifully made, compact set with smooth playing surface and reliable magnetism. The wooden box stores the well-carved pieces in foam, closures work solidly, and the whole unit is light and portable. I’m very happy with it and would consider buying another as a gift.

Lovely craftsmanship, great travel companion
My son bought this for trips and was delighted with the quality. The board shows careful joinery and a smooth finish. The pieces are magnetized strongly enough that they stayed attached even when inverted. The storage bag is nicely lined and the interior has velvet-like foam with individual slots for each piece. Only a very small imperfection appeared, otherwise it’s very well made.

Extremely pleased — solid travel chess set
I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality. The wood finish and the foam cutouts inside the case give it a premium feel. Pieces are a handy size — not fiddly, yet small enough to slip into a pack. Magnets keep pieces steady during bumpy travel and the padded pouch is a thoughtful add-on. Plenty of friends have asked where I got it.
