Adjustable 1 / 1.5 / 2 Yard Niddy Noddy for Winding Yarn
Product description
What you get: a single adjustable niddy noddy constructed from high-impact hard plastic that breaks down for compact storage and travel. The unit includes a center shaft and removable crossbars/extenders so you can set it to produce skeins roughly 1 yard, 1.5 yards, or 2 yards long.
Materials & dimensions: made from sturdy hard plastic designed to resist snapping in normal use. The standard arrangement yields a one-yard loop; add the extender(s) to increase the loop length to about 1.5 or 2 yards. There are holes in the shaft useful for securing the yarn tail when starting a skein.
How to wind: begin by securing one end of yarn to the center shaft or through a hole to hold it. Wrap the yarn around the center, then continue over the left end of the top crossbar, down and under the right side of the lower crossbar, up and over the opposite top crossbar, and down under its lower crossbar—returning to the start to complete each turn.
Portability & care: the pieces separate for compact transport and storage. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat (hot cars, direct sunlight, steam), which can deform the plastic. After skeining you may dye or wash to set the twist; to relax and lengthen the yarn, dry the skein under tension with a small weight at the bottom of the loop.
Usage notes: the plastic surface is finished smooth to minimize catching on handspun fibers, and the adjustable lengths make it versatile for different projects. At larger settings the assembly can flex under heavy tension, so watch your wrapping tension when making longer skeins.
Pros
- Lightweight and travel-friendly
- Adjustable for three skein lengths
- Smooth finish protects yarn
Cons
- Can flex at extended lengths
- Plastic pieces may feel less rigid than wood
- Avoid high heat exposure
VerdictA practical, portable yarn winder that delivers accurate small skeins and convenient storage. It’s durable and smooth for most projects, though extended setups can be less stable under high tension. Good value for spinners who need a travel-friendly option and multiple skein lengths.

Handy little skein winder
Does the job well. Tucks into my project bag and snaps together easily for use.

Great for travel
Performs well and packs into tight spaces—ideal for trips. Keep an eye on tension since the larger settings are more flexible.

Not firm enough for heavy tension
Pieces lean once winding starts, making the skein uneven and causing yarn to slip off. The interlocks don’t hold tight enough for a rigid tool. I suggest a wooden version if you need more stability.

Essential for beginners
Smart design, simple to use and store. Different sizes are handy for varying spun amounts. Great option if you’re new to spinning.

Solid and compact
Sturdy plastic and easy to pack. The 1.5 setup needed a slightly different winding method that wasn't included, but I found a photo online to follow.

Perfect compact size
Fits my spinning travel bag and the one-yard setting is exactly what I need for spindle work. Sturdier than expected and the shaft holes hold my starting tail well.

Exactly what I wanted
Works fine. Can make skeins in two sizes and fits into my wheel bag.

Very heat- and impact-resistant
Material is tough and tolerates a fair bit of tension without deforming, and it handled steaming to relax reused yarn without issue. The different sizes make it versatile. Good product.

Works great at smallest size, struggles with extenders
Without extensions it performs beautifully. Add one extender and stability issues appear; with both it nearly collapses under yarn tension and the crossbars don’t hold large skeins well.

Practical reel for spinners
I spin my own yarn and use a reel to make skeins and measure yardage. This plastic version isn’t as pretty as wood but is far more practical: it breaks down for storage, adjusts sizes, and is inexpensive. Overall a very useful tool.

Smooth, travelable, economical choice
I only use the one-yard setting, and it’s been flawless. The plastic is very smooth and hasn't snagged my handspun. If a rough spot appears I can sand it lightly. Much more affordable than bigger wooden options and breaks down for travel—would recommend.

Accurate for short skeins
Makes a true one-yard skein without the extender. With the extender it felt a bit narrow and wobbly for my longer skeins.
