Kaytee CritterTrail Two-Level Habitat for Small Pets — Cage Review
Product description
The Two Level CritterTrail habitat arrives ready with several included accessories: a removable petting zone, a food dish, a small exercise wheel, and a gravity-style water bottle. The unit is constructed from molded plastic bases, clear plastic tubes and tunnels, and wire upper panels that form the living levels and front access. The design also features a lookout tower and an exterior wheel mount to encourage activity.
Dimensions for the assembled habitat are approximately 20 inches long by 11.5 inches wide and 16 inches tall, with narrow bar spacing of about 1/4 inch to help keep tiny escape artists inside. The top petting area detaches for hands-on interaction and the front wire door and lift-off top make reaching into the cage possible without full disassembly. Multiple connection points allow you to attach CritterTrail Fun-nel tunnel kits to expand the layout into a maze or connect to other units.
This habitat is intended for dwarf hamsters, small hamsters, gerbils, mice and other small rodents. Setup requires snapping plastic components together and securing wire panels into the base. Regular cleaning is achieved by lifting the top section out of the lower tray and removing the washable accessories; some owners prefer to occasionally remove and replace worn plastic elements like clips or wheels over long-term use.
Pros
- Two-level layout with petting zone and lookout tower
- Includes wheel, dish and water bottle out of the box
- Modular tunnels allow expansion and maze creation
Cons
- Assembly can be awkward and tight-fitting
- Some plastic clips and parts may wear with chewers
- Cleaning requires partial disassembly
VerdictThis two-level CritterTrail cage gives small rodents vertical space and play opportunities with built-in tunnels and a top petting zone. Assembly can be fiddly and some plastic parts may wear over time, but the layout, accessories, and modular connectivity make it a lively environment for active hamsters, mice and gerbils. If you prefer more durable, aquarium-style housing you might look elsewhere

Glad I bought it despite mixed feedback
I hesitated because of negative reviews but ordered anyway and delivery was quick. Assembly was a pain, but worth it for my three dwarf hamsters who use the wheel and tunnels constantly. There’s a small roof hut I fill with soft bedding where they sleep. One water bottle had a stiff ball; I swapped it for another model and that solved the issue.

Functional but assembly is very difficult
Many reviewers weren’t exaggerating about how hard this is to put together. With prior research and a video tutorial it still took about 90 minutes and I was nervous about cracking parts. I may have stressed the bottom tray a bit during assembly. That said, for its size and the two-level design it offered the most space among similar options, and once built it serves its purpose well.

My gerbils adore it, but assembly is brutal
My two female gerbils absolutely love the expanded tubes and rooms. The package arrived with extra tubing and a tangle of parts — the instructions were minimal, so I relied on the pictures. Putting it together felt like a workout: many parts require force to snap in place and it took some effort and cursing to assemble. Once completed the setup looks great and the pets use it constantly, but be ready for a physically demanding build.

Teddy and George settled in well
After trying a few different homes, this cage has become a long-term choice for our two mice. It keeps them contained with tighter bar spacing than many cages and gives better airflow than a flat-sided tank. The modular tunnel options and multiple levels make it a livelier environment for play and exploration, and our pair enjoy the top nest area and running wheel.

Happy with the extra room for two mice
I was hesitant because of mixed feedback, but this worked well for two young mice. Everything arrived intact and the kit included all parts. Assembly required patience—some pieces were stiff and a bent wire had to be straightened with pliers—but going slowly prevented breakage. The tunnels, platforms and top nest area give the mice lots to explore and the finished habitat is very engaging.

Escape-prone stopper needs improvement
We've had our hamster in this cage for a couple months and she chewed through the blue roof stopper and got out. Replacement parts may be available, but I’ve ordered an extension hoping it helps. The stopper material should be more resistant to nibbling.

Solid cage once assembled
The first unit I received had a broken top clip but a replacement was sent out quickly when reported. The cage requires some skill to assemble, but after you know the steps it goes faster. Cleaning is manageable: pop the pets into the petting area, lift the top and cap the opening, then wash the base and accessories. Overall it’s no more difficult than other plastic modular cages I've used.

Roomy and entertaining
I tried a couple of other CritterTrail versions before this one and wanted something taller for my male teddy bear hamster. This two-level layout adds about five inches of height and keeps the petting zone I liked from the starter models. I removed one tube to give extra floor area; hamsters often soil tubes so fewer connections can be beneficial. It comes with a wheel, though my hamster prefers to climb and tunnel instead.

Great as an exercise area
We use this primarily as an evening exercise habitat and the gerbils go nuts for it. It’s easy to assemble and we added multiple funnel tube sets to make a long maze they run through across the carpet. The wheel in this unit gets far more use than the quieter spinner in their other enclosure; they sprint and love the tube connections. The whole system lifts and stores easily when not in use.

Secure, roomy choice for a small pet
I've used this cage for over a year and it's been a solid option. Contrary to other comments, I find cleaning straightforward: the top lifts out so you don't have to dismantle the whole unit. The plastic pieces hold up about like any similar design; if you want an indestructible option, an aquarium is an alternative but you lose the tunnel system. After a year the wheel broke but it was simple to replace. Overall I prefer the extra floor area and the upper platforms this offers compared with many single-level cages.
