The FX4 is a canister-style aquarium filter built for larger tanks and heavy bio-loads. It delivers a maximum pump throughput of 700 US gallons (2,650 L) per hour and maintains a working circulation that cleans and oxygenates aquarium water efficiently. An onboard Smart Pump microchip continuously monitors pump performance, adjusting impeller operation and diagnosing conditions to preserve output and efficiency.
This model is self-priming: add water, plug it in, and the electronics manage startup. Every 12 hours the system pauses briefly to allow accumulated air to escape, preventing air locks and maintaining consistent flow. The canister includes removable, stacked media baskets that eliminate bypass and together hold 1 US gallon (3.9 L) of media. The set ships with mechanical, chemical, and biological filter media already provided. Each basket features a foam insert that acts as a pre-filter to trap larger particles before water moves through chemical and biological layers. T-shaped quick-release handles allow fast separation of baskets for routine cleaning or media changes.
Physically the FX4 is compact, standing roughly 16.5 inches (42 cm) tall so it fits under most aquarium cabinets. Hoses and valves are designed for secure connections and the unit includes an integrated drain to simplify water changes. Very solid filter — may buy another
I prefer this canister to many hang-on units. It’s easy to service, comes with a generous amount of media, and is repairable if a small part fails. Flow is excellent. It’s large so measure your cabinet first, but it keeps my tank crystal clear.

Quiet, easy to set up, great pump for filling
After one day of operation I can already say it’s whisper-quiet and simple to assemble. I had no suitable faucet adapter, so I used the pump to move buckets of water into my 120 gal tank — tedious but the pump handled every trip without issue. Initial impressions are very positive.

Missing a key siphon warning in the manual
Product works great, but the instructions don’t explain outflow height vs tank level and I experienced a siphon overflow on first run. I learned to position the outflow just above water level to prevent back-siphoning. This tip should be in the manual for new users.

Worth the upgrade for large tanks

Warranty and support were frustrating
Unit worked well for about nine months, then stopped. I purchased an extended warranty and contacted support, but the back-and-forth inspection requests dragged on. I followed troubleshooting steps and provided photos, but felt the process was slow and inconsistent.

Longtime hobbyist finally tried the FX4
After decades of keeping fish and testing gear, I installed the FX4 on my 150 gal tank today. I previously ran an older FX5 and felt the FX line had strong flow and capacity. The FX4 is a heavy unit and provides substantial volume and flow — more than typical hang-on filters. Setup was straightforward. Those who only want maximum flow might consider other options, but for volume, multistage media, and a solid canister design, this is highly capable.
