Aquarium
Aquarium Salinity Refractometer with ATC — Dual-Scale Salinity Tester
Product description
This handheld salinity refractometer is built to measure salt concentration in seawater, aquaria, pools and similar applications. It provides two scales on the prism: parts-per-thousand (0–100 PPT) and specific gravity (1.000–1.070), so you can see both salinity and SG from a single sample.
The unit includes the refractometer body with an adjustable eyepiece, a small calibration screwdriver, a plastic dropper, a protective soft case and a brief instruction sheet. The optical prism and reading plate are glass, the main housing is a lightweight metal alloy, and the eyepiece and focus ring are rubberized for grip. The sample cover plate is clear glass for good light transmission.
At roughly a compact, pocketable size it fits comfortably in one hand for quick spot checks. Using it is straightforward: place a few drops of sample onto the prism, close the cover plate, point the instrument toward a light source, focus the eyepiece and read the scale where the boundary falls. Calibrate quickly with distilled or RO water using the supplied screwdriver; automatic temperature compensation helps keep readings stable around normal room temperatures.
Designed to be more accurate and easier to use than many floating hydrometers and less costly than digital bench meters, this refractometer is useful for routine aquarium maintenance, marine monitoring, educational labs and small-scale gardening or brine tasks. It’s best used for salinity measurements rather than concentrated sugar solutions.
Pros
- Dual-scale readout (PPT and SG)
- Built-in automatic temperature compensation
- Compact, easy to calibrate and use
Cons
- Eyepiece feels inexpensive to some users
- Not ideal for measuring dissolved sugars
- Occasional small recalibration may be needed
VerdictA compact, affordable optical refractometer aimed at aquarium and marine hobbyists who need reliable salinity checks. It offers dual readings in parts per thousand and specific gravity, built-in ATC for temperature stability, and simple calibration with the included tool. While not a substitute for high-end lab gear or for measuring dense sugar solutions, it delivers repeatable, easy-to-read resul

Does exactly what it should
Simple to zero and very consistent. It holds calibration and makes routine checks painless. Highly satisfied with the performance.

Surprisingly capable compared with commercial gear
Great value — this unit matched up well against our commercial YSI after a single calibration. Distilled water didn’t zero perfectly, so I recommend calibrating against a known standard and then using it to track relative changes. Fast and simple to use; handy for matching another sample’s reading.

Wish I bought one sooner
Calibration was a one-turn job with the supplied screwdriver. No more guessing with meniscus readings from a hydrometer. Focusing is easy — a very useful tool for saltwater aquaria.

Accurate and repeatable results
Readings are much steadier than the hydrometers I tried. I bought a 1.026 standard for calibration and now hit my 1.024 target consistently. Distilled water reads slightly low but the upper range is linear and reliable. Easy to adjust with the small screwdriver included.

Surprisingly easy and reliable
I was intimidated at first but it’s effortless: one drop, close the cover, point at light and read. The scale is clear and it feels far more accurate than older devices I’ve used. Seems durable too.

Complete kit for routine testing
After months of use it has been accurate. I do a quick calibration check before water changes. Feels solid and comes with the accessories you need; a desk lamp helps if you lack bright daylight.

Excellent for salinity but not for wort
I found it very accurate for salt solutions but it gave off readings with sugary mashes compared to my hydrometer (about 0.020 SG high). Calibrated with deionized water but sugar solutions still diverged. If you’re measuring salinity this is excellent; for brewing sugar concentrations, a hydrometer is better.

Faster and simpler than a floating hydrometer
I use it for brackish shrimp tanks and it’s accurate enough for my needs. The eyepiece felt a bit cheap and it arrived out of calibration, but adjusting it was trivial. Quick to use when setting up brine or hatcheries.
