Flagstaff: Gateway to Northern Arizona’s Wonders

Flagstaff & Northern Arizona: A Refreshing Mountain Escape

Greetings, fellow travelers! Our family recently embarked on a wonderfully refreshing, albeit brief, journey to Flagstaff and the stunning landscapes of Northern Arizona. After venturing to Disneyland and the California coast last year, we decided this year to explore the incredible beauty within our home state, embracing a series of shorter, more intimate excursions.

One of the greatest joys of heading north is escaping the intense desert heat and rediscovering the sheer pleasure of outdoor activities in a significantly cooler climate. The moment we arrived in Flagstaff, we were eager to stretch our legs and immerse ourselves in nature. Our first adventure led us to a scenic hike in the majestic San Francisco Peaks. There’s something truly invigorating about seeing vibrant green foliage after spending months in arid landscapes!

Flagstaff: A Quick Getaway to Mountain Serenity

Flagstaff offers an incredibly convenient escape, located approximately a two-hour drive from Phoenix. While my husband, the designated driver, maintains a brisk pace (sometimes making me grip the seat with an imaginary brake!), we were fortunate to enjoy absolutely gorgeous, sunny weather on our trip. Being a weekday, the roads were delightfully free of heavy traffic, making the journey even more pleasant.

In what felt like no time at all, we transitioned from our sun-drenched desert home to a breathtaking mountain vista. This particular view unfolded along the scenic Mount Humphreys Trail, nestled just outside Flagstaff, where the renowned Snowbowl ski resort makes its home. This area epitomizes the dramatic change in Arizona’s topography, showcasing lush forests and towering peaks.

Adventures at Snowbowl and Mount Humphreys

Snowbowl isn’t just for winter sports enthusiasts; it’s a year-round paradise. During the warmer summer months, visitors can explore a network of well-maintained hiking trails that wind through dense forests and offer panoramic views. For those seeking an easier ascent, a scenic ride on the ski lift provides an effortless way to admire the spectacular scenery, with vistas stretching for miles. When winter descends and the mountains are blanketed in pristine snow, the focus shifts entirely to exhilarating skiing and snowboarding adventures. The diverse offerings make Snowbowl a truly dynamic destination, catering to different interests and seasons.

Our previous visit to this area was unfortunately cut short by incessant rain, limiting our ability to truly explore. This time, blessed with clear skies, we made it a priority to spend as much time outdoors as possible, soaking in every moment of the crisp mountain air and vibrant natural beauty.

As we meandered along the base of the trail, we encountered a unique tradition: initials carved into the smooth, pale trunks of the aspen trees. These carvings, left by countless visitors over the years, tell silent stories of past adventures and add a touch of human history to the ancient forest. While some may debate the environmental impact, it’s undeniably a distinct feature of this beloved area, often seen in popular mountain destinations.

Our Stay: Little America Hotel and Nature Walks

Over the many years we’ve been visiting Flagstaff, we’ve experienced a variety of accommodations, ranging from charming rustic cabins nestled deep in the woods to more contemporary hotels within the city limits. For this particular trip, we opted for the renowned Little America Hotel, a choice that truly offered the best of both worlds.

This exceptional hotel boasts its own sprawling 500-acre private woods, complete with meticulously maintained walking trails. The morning after our arrival, a few of the kids and I eagerly set out for a delightful nature walk amongst the majestic Ponderosa pines. The air was crisp and fragrant with the scent of pine needles, and the gentle rustling of leaves created a soothing soundtrack. It was a perfect opportunity to connect with nature without having to travel far from our comfortable lodgings.

During our serene forest stroll, we were treated to a delightful wildlife encounter. We spotted this adorable little guy, a squirrel, busily enjoying his breakfast amidst the trees. He was quite engrossed in his meal, allowing me to approach fairly close before he eventually scampered away, disappearing into the dense foliage. Moments like these truly highlight the abundant wildlife that thrives in Flagstaff’s natural surroundings.

Culinary Explorations: From Craft Beer to Legendary Pies

While I didn’t manage to capture a picture of our entire dinner (I did snap a quick, dark photo of my pizza on my phone since we were dining on a dimly lit patio!), our evening meal at Beaver Street Brewery was absolutely awesome! The ambiance was vibrant, and the food was simply outstanding. It’s truly the taste that counts, and Beaver Street Brewery delivered.

Beaver Street Brewery: Local Flavors and Craft Brews

Although I wouldn’t describe myself as a dedicated beer drinker, I felt it was essential to sample one of Beaver Street Brewery’s acclaimed handcrafted brews. After perusing their extensive menu, I settled on the Grapefruit Pale Ale – yes, grapefruit in a beer! And to my surprise, it was a fantastic choice. The subtle citrus notes perfectly complemented our meal, especially the Southwest Chicken Pizza, which was bursting with authentic flavors. In fact, that pizza was so delicious, it’s inspired me to try and recreate a similar version in my own kitchen!

Flagstaff boasts a thriving culinary scene, and Beaver Street Brewery is a prime example of the city’s commitment to quality local ingredients and innovative flavors. Beyond breweries, visitors can find a diverse array of dining options, from cozy cafes serving up hearty breakfast burritos to fine dining establishments that showcase the region’s fresh produce. Exploring Flagstaff’s food landscape is an adventure in itself, reflecting its vibrant community and unique mountain culture.

Rock Springs Cafe: A Sweet Stop on the Journey Home

No trip back from Northern Arizona is complete without a traditional stop at the iconic Rock Springs Cafe, located near Black Canyon City. This beloved establishment is legendary for its pies, and it’s become a cherished ritual for us to pick up a couple to enjoy back home after our visits up north. The anticipation of these delectable treats often makes the drive home feel shorter!

On this particular trip, our selections included a rich chocolate cream pie and a comforting peach crumble. I managed to snap a quick photo just before we dug in, and while the quality might not be professional, it certainly conveys the generous size of these delicious creations. Just look at that mountain of whipped cream on the chocolate pie – pure indulgence!

Seriously, if you ever find yourself driving through the area, I wholeheartedly recommend making a stop at Rock Springs Cafe and treating yourself to one of their famous pies. You absolutely will not be disappointed – it’s an experience for the taste buds that you won’t soon forget!
