Easy Swiss Chicken Recipe

I rediscovered this Swiss chicken casserole among my grandmother’s recipes and adapted it to make a faster, family-friendly version. By cutting the chicken into smaller pieces, the dish cooks more quickly and is easier to serve. I also add green beans for texture and color, then top everything with a boxed stuffing mix that bakes up golden and crunchy.

The whole casserole takes under an hour from start to finish and requires only one pan, so cleanup is simple. It’s a comforting, cheesy dinner that pleases both adults and picky eaters.

The list below covers the main ingredients used in this Swiss chicken casserole. Full quantities and complete instructions are included in the recipe card that follows.

  • Boneless skinless chicken breasts — cut into smaller pieces for quick, even cooking
  • Cream of chicken soup — base of the creamy sauce
  • Chicken broth — thins the sauce and moistens the stuffing
  • Dijon mustard — gives a subtle tang
  • Swiss cheese — mild, melty cheese that complements the sauce
  • Seasonings — sea salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, garlic powder
  • Green beans — use frozen or canned for convenience
  • Boxed stuffing mix — provides the crunchy topping (or substitute breadcrumbs)
  • Butter — dotted over the stuffing so it browns and crisps

How to Make Swiss Chicken Casserole

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish. Arrange the chicken pieces in a single layer, season with salt and pepper, and brush the tops with Dijon mustard. In a small bowl, stir together the cream of chicken soup, 1/4 cup of the chicken broth, Italian seasoning and garlic powder until smooth. Pour this sauce evenly over the chicken. Layer Swiss cheese slices over the sauced chicken, then add the green beans on top of the cheese. Sprinkle the boxed stuffing mix across the casserole, pour the remaining 1/4 cup broth over the stuffing to moisten it, and dot the top with cubed butter. Bake uncovered for 30–35 minutes, until the stuffing is golden and the casserole is bubbling. Check the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) with an instant-read thermometer before serving.

Tips for Making Swiss Chicken Bake

Cut the chicken into small, uniform pieces so every bite cooks at the same rate. Use an instant-read thermometer to confirm the internal temperature reaches 165°F for safe, juicy chicken. The casserole can be baked uncovered; if the stuffing browns too quickly, tent it loosely with foil during the last few minutes.

Variations

If you prefer to leave chicken breasts whole or use breast halves, expect the casserole to require closer to an hour of baking time. Dark meat like boneless thighs or chicken tenders can be substituted and will add extra flavor. If Swiss cheese isn’t your favorite, mild substitutes such as Muenster or Havarti melt well in this dish. You can also swap boxed stuffing for seasoned breadcrumbs for a different texture.
