SmartDoor Connected Pet Door (Medium) — App-Controlled
Product description
Give your pet controlled freedom from anywhere with an app-driven pet flap designed for medium-sized animals. The Medium SmartDoor Connected Pet Door ships with a Medium Pet Door Key that attaches to a pet’s existing collar and can also be paired with a cat’s implanted microchip (check model compatibility before buying). The kit’s flap is made from sturdy plastic with a tinted finish for privacy and features dynamic weather sealing plus a multi-point locking mechanism to reduce drafts and improve energy efficiency.
Operation is handled through the My PetSafe mobile app: you can create profiles for each animal, set multiple daily access schedules, lock or unlock the flap remotely, and receive alerts when a pet uses the door or when battery and lock status change. The SmartDoor runs on four C batteries or can be powered from a wall adaptor (sold separately) and requires a 2.4 GHz high-speed Wi‑Fi connection for cloud features. A recent firmware update addressed several app connectivity, performance, and security issues.
Installation involves cutting an opening in a door or wall to match the unit’s footprint and is typically a weekend DIY project for two people. The SmartDoor comes in Medium and Large sizes; verify that your door or wall material and thickness are compatible before installation. Extra Pet Door Keys are available for additional animals, and microchip pairing provides a keyless option for compatible chips. The unit is intended to balance pet freedom with household security by preventing entry from unidentified animals.
Pros
- Remote locking and scheduling via mobile app
- Selective access with collar key or compatible microchip
- Energy-efficient weather sealing and multi-point lock
Cons
- App and firmware can be unstable for some users
- Microchip detection is inconsistent with certain chip types
- Lock motor and mechanics reported to fail by some owners
VerdictThe SmartDoor Connected Pet Door delivers convenient remote control, individualized schedules, and selective entry for multi-pet homes, but experiences with app stability, chip detection, and the lock motor are mixed. It’s a robust, energy-conscious flap with thoughtful hardware, yet some users report frustrating software bugs, inconsistent microchip reads, and occasional mechanical failures. Good

Microchip incompatibility with newer chips
I installed the medium flap and tried to enable microchip access, but the unit didn’t recognize my cats’ newer chips. The vet confirmed the reader uses older RF detection standards, so newer implants may not be detected. I returned the unit for a refund.

Solid construction and useful notifications
After hesitating because of negative reports, I installed it and found it well built. It lets me manage access for five dogs and sends entry/exit alerts. Follow instructions carefully for metal doors, since metal affects tag detection. I’m running on batteries and have seen consistent life and stable Wi‑Fi. Note: when using access control, there can be a brief wait for the latch to release.

Stopped working within a year, but replaced under warranty
It performed well for months but then ceased functioning completely in under a year. I improvised a manual fix to keep the flap usable, which was inconvenient. After contacting customer service it was covered by the 12-month warranty and they agreed to replace it. Changing my rating based on that responsive support.

Hardware is solid but 'smart' features fail often
Physically the door feels robust, but the smart functions are inconsistent. The collar tag detection is unreliable and the unit frequently drops offline, making the remote features useless at times. It’s overpriced for the experience.

Flap alignment and catches cause pets to be stuck
The flap tends to overswing and then lacks the power to return to center, settling just before the catches. That leaves my cat stuck on either side until I force the flap fully open. It’s dangerous and impractical unless someone is always nearby to help.

Unreliable software and weak chip reader
This product cost me a lot of frustration. The app is buggy, scheduled permissions sometimes reset, and the RF reader struggled to detect my cat’s implanted chip after setup. I had to rely on the collar tag, which is not ideal. The flap also failed to fully latch at times, causing continuous motor cycling.

Cats love it — controlled access works well
My cats enjoy coming and going freely, and because only their collar tags allow entry, we haven’t had strays coming in. Everyone in the household is happy with the convenience and control.

Used unit locked out and outdated firmware problem
I bought a refurbished-like unit and it locked me out after showing an unsupported firmware message. Getting replacement help was slow and confusing; I struggled to reach proper technical support and felt misled about compatibility and updates.

Easy install, but fob attachment slips off
Installation was straightforward and it functions as intended. The only problem I’ve had is keeping the collar fob attached — its clip is too small for my dog’s key ring and keeps slipping off. I’ve reached out to support but haven’t heard back yet.

App failures and locking motor jam after weeks
The flap initially worked but the app frequently lost its Wi‑Fi link and then the locking motor began to stick after some weeks, leaving us unable to open the flap reliably. Build quality and size were good, but the lock motor must be dependable. We decided to return it.

Disappointed — setup and app are clunky
I switched from another cat flap to get timed and selective access but ran into unexpected issues. The unit required extra hardware for wall mounting and the installation is more intrusive than I expected. The app setup was not intuitive — changing a programmed schedule meant deleting and recreating entries. My cat also seemed unsettled by the frosted flap, and the overall experience didn’t match the advertised simplicity.
