CRAFTSMAN 50 ft Contractor Retractable Cord Reel — 4-Outlet Unit
Product description
This retractable cord reel ships as a complete roll-up extension unit with an integrated reel, a built-in handle and four grounded outlets mounted on the drum. The design places the cord and receptacles on a heavy-duty open metal drum for improved strength and heat dissipation.
The reel uses a durable 12 AWG power cable in a high-visibility finish to reduce trip hazards and improve on-site visibility. The cable feeds to four grounded sockets so you can power multiple tools at once. The unit includes an auto-locking rewind mechanism to hold the cord at desired lengths and a convenient, textured handle for carrying and winding.
A built-in thermal overload/circuit breaker protects connected equipment by cutting power if the current or voltage exceeds rated limits. The reel is rated for 15 A, 125 V and up to 1,875 W and carries CSA certification.
Construction mixes a large steel drum and a robust tubular frame to stand up to contractor use. The open drum and exposed wheel design make it easy to rewind and inspect the cord. While the drum and handle are engineered for heavy use, the unit sits directly on the work surface and does not include rubber feet.
Intended uses include powering cordless charger stations, drills, table saws, electric mowers, snow blowers, power washers and generators. The reel is intended for outdoor and jobsite environments where portable, protected power distribution is needed.
Pros
- Sturdy metal drum and tubular frame
- Four grounded outlets with 12AWG high-visibility cable
- Built-in overload/circuit breaker for protection
Cons
- No rubber feet; can slide on smooth surfaces
- Some reports of wobble or shipping damage
- Frame-mounted reel can be awkward to service
VerdictA rugged open-reel extension designed for demanding work: metal drum construction, a comfortable carry handle, four grounded receptacles and overload protection make it a reliable power solution for tools and outdoor equipment. Some users report stability or shipping damage issues, but many appreciate the sturdy cable, high amp rating and convenient rewind mechanism.

Does the job
A bit on the costly side, but performs as intended and is worth it for heavier-duty applications.

Good companion for corded tools
Most of my gear is cordless, but when I need true AC power this reel works well and handles typical shop equipment.

Easy to operate with a generator
Well-built and straightforward to use. I run it from a generator parked in an attached garage to bring power into the house during outages — it rolls out and rewinds without trouble.

Heavy-duty and well balanced
Nice, thick cord and a metal reel that handles 15A loads. The offset, comfortable carry handle helps keep the unit balanced. I only wish it had rubber feet to prevent sliding, otherwise a solid product.

Very useful for wet areas
I purchased several 12 gauge versions for use in a detailing bay. They keep cords elevated away from wash water and have worked perfectly so far.

Reel has significant wobble when rewinding
The frame and handle feel solid and the cord guide keeps the cable tidy, but the drum wobbles a lot during rewind. It acts as if the outlet end lacks a stabilizing support or bearing. I can't access the outlets side to inspect it myself. Manufacturer told me the wobble isn’t normal and likely came from rough handling in transit, and they offered a replacement.

First unit damaged, replacement arrived intact
My initial shipment arrived dented and bent. The vendor provided a return label and I received a second unit in good shape, though I had to recreate the order process. It’s essentially a long extension on an easy-rolling wheel; the 12 gauge model uses a metal wheel while the 14 gauge uses a plastic one. Outlets appear to be 15A rated. Expect eventual paint wear and possible rust if left in harsh climates.

Reel pops off the frame
Bought this as a gift, but when winding the cord the spool frequently comes off the frame, making it difficult to retract. Odd design — the reel should stay seated during winding.
